This video was filmed at Body Worlds, Edmonton science Center with Dr. Brian Abelson and Dr. Tarveen Ahluwalia.
Brian Abelson is the author of Release Your Pain: Resolving Repetitive Strain Injuries with Active Release Techniques®.
The figures used in this video are not sculptures, they are actual "plastinated" cadavers. So if you are squeamish about such things, don't watch the video.
Dr. Brian Abelson, Kinetic Health Calgary
Dr. Abelson discusses some of the deeper tissue layers of the back, and the importance of the gluteus medius.
Sciatic Nerve and Sciatic Nerve Compression
He discusses common entrapment problems with the sciatic nerve such as piriformis syndrome and then the lesser known sciatic compressers, which, along with the piriformis are known as the "deep six external hip rotators":
- Piriformis
- Gemellus Superior
- Obdurator Internus
- Gemellus Inferior
- Obdurator Externis
- Quadratus Femoris
The sciatic nerve is followed down the leg and we see some other structures which the nerve goes through.
Kinetic Chain Relationships
Kinetic chain relationships are discussed such as how the fascial lines connect the lower body to the upper. For instance, how tight hamstrings can affect the low back and then the structures higher up. This fascial fiber relationship is why we can see shoulder problems that actually stem from problems in the opposite hip.
Antagonistic Relationships
This can basically be summed up as: If there is pain, restriction, or tightness in a muscle or group of muscles, look at the opposite muscle. All too often we only consider the site of the pain. The source of the pain may be quite distant. Pain in your back can be caused by problems in your front.
Dr. Tarveen Ahluwalia
Manual Treatment for Low Back and other Soft Tissue Pain
Dr. Tarveen Ahluwalia discusses treatment for restrictions, adhesions, and pain in soft tissue using ART®, Graston®, or Massage Therapy. She explains how the technician must use their hands to physically locate the affected tissues by looking for tender areas, ropiness or knots under the skin, such as small bb's and how these treatments must be used to break up the scar tissue which has formed in these areas.
