The following video shows an example of an "Active Release Therapy" session for low back pain. ART® stands for Active Release Techniques ® and it is a combination pressure, tension, and motion that, according to Dr. Brian Abelson, "forces the layers of tissue and muscle to work together properly".
This hands on treatment is said to:
- restore optimal tissue texture, tension, and movement
- restore the strength, flexibility, relative translation, and function of the soft tissue
- release any soft-tissue restrictions or entrapped nerves, restricted circulatory structures, or lymphatic restrictions [1].
Who can practice it?
ART® is a very specific set of protocols invented by Dr. Michael Leahy. If you are seeking an ART practitioner you must be sure that the one you choose has an actual certification which requires extensive training, time, and resourses. Only individuals who have undergone this training are legally allowed to say they are practicing ART. These individuals will have:
- Completed and all three sections of ART and received their certification with Active Release Techniques
- Undergone training and testing with Dr. Micheal Leahy by attending at least 3 four day workshops. They must have pass both the written and practical exam with at least a 90% grade.
- MAINTAIN their accreditation by passing a yearly exam to show they are up to date with the ever evolving discipline. [1]

ART® claims to actually remove the source of the problem rather than just treat the symptoms. Whether this is true or not, ART therapy has certainly become widely popular among athletes, strength enthusiasts, and bodybuilders.
