The first step is to get the sand for your project. The perfect sandbag is like the perfect house; it must have a sturdy foundation in order to stand the test of time. Your sandbag will consist of mason sand and these bags are found at any home improvement store. You can buy them in fifty pound bags for no more than four dollars each. For starters, I personally recommend you buying three, fifty pound bags of mason sand. Next, you need to find, acquire, or buy a military duffel bag. If there tough enough for the military, you can definitely train with them. Each military duffle will cost you about fifteen dollars at an army/navy surplus store. If you have a duffle bag that is not ripped, feel free to use it for this project. Lastly, you have to buy a single roll of white athletic tape. This is what you will wrap around the top of the duffel bags after you put the mason sand bags in. Athletic tape is always good to have around for first aid applications.
To make your perfect sandbag, you need to put one or two nice black contractor garbage bags inside your duffel bag. This will serve as a liner and something that will protect your training area free from loose sand. Now take the mason sand still in its original bag pour it slowly into the duffel bag. Now tie a knot in the black contractor bag to seal the liner. Pick the bag up by the top and make sure the mason sand is definitely at the bottom of the bag without slack. Now grab the duffel bag four to six inches over the mason sand and start twisting it around. Once you have a good twist, use the white athletic tape to seal it in place.
Now you can pick it up, jog, run, press, squat, lunge, carry, load, hoist, drag, or do anything you want with it in your own space. This is what I call a home gym! Do not be fooled that you need to spend a lot of money on sandbags because of durability problems either.
