Eccentric Movement or Action

Eccentric Movement: The part of a strength training movement where the muscle elongates. When you lower the weight back to the starting position, called the "negative", the muscular action is eccentric meaning that the muscle is lengthening under tension. This happens because the torque being created by the muscular contraction is less than the torque of the resistance. Eccentric actions function as brakes to various bodily movements. See also concentric movement or action.
