Anabolism

Anabolism comes from the Greek: anabole, "to build up". Anabolism is the phase of metabolism in which simple substances are synthesized into the complex materials of living tissue, or more simply, where larger molecules are built up from smaller ones. This process involves a sequence of chemical reactions that constructs or synthesizes molecules from smaller units, usually requiring input of energy (ATP) in the process, that energy being derived from catabolic processes. The building up of proteins from amino acids is an example.
