What should be the scapular position while doing a bench press? Should the scapula be contracted throughout the movement? I find it hard to lift when my whole concentration is on contracting(retracting) the scapula.

Yes the scapula should be retracted. It is something you have to get used to. It really shouldn't take up all of your concentration after you adjust to it. It may help to get a hand off if you have trouble staying retracted and tight when setting up for the lift.
