I want to add a few things to what I wrote earlier.
Those 2 views of mine are what I held at the time - over a year and a half ago. But, this was during the time when I was being exposed to K11's training routines which involved more Squatting and less Deadlifting because of various purposes pertaining to health, safety, blah blah.
Also, since that point I've come to see things a little differently.
Given the introduction of Pistol squats, various Squat variations and Hip Mobility drills, etc I think that perhaps Squatting can be sustainable - it's just that the "data pool" (however unofficial) at the time was very limited to Powerlifters and Strongman Trainers and that too they all had the same habits (and this is what I observed from all the logs I used to follow at MMI Powertraining, IA's, Marunde, EliteFTS Logs, etc):
- Barely any warm-ups
- Gear usage
- Box Squats are KING
- No Hip/Ankle Mobility + Glute Activation
- No Unilateral Leg Training
- No foam rolling
- More Squatting than Deadlifting
- Partial Squatting i.e. not going deep either out of lack of ability or for legal purposes
But now, over the last two years or so, this has changed a lot. So I am not sure how many of this current generation of Powerlifters who are doing all these "new" things which they did not do before will end up with the same knee pain/soreness or surgery later on in life.
So perhaps Squatting from that front is "Sustainable".
But, I've been thinking about it, and I want to add a couple more things. One: I love Deadlifts over Squats so perhaps my views are biased.
With Squats, the main issue always faced is Depth. Most trainees as they get stronger end up cutting it a bit high on Squats. But…this can be circumvented if form is especially closely paid attention to. However, this can happen in Deadlifts too - where someone starts getting sloppy, etc.
BUT…for some reason I think Deadlifts are a more honest exercise: either you picked it up off the floor or you didn't. Depth judges can have varied opinions but a Deadlift locked out is a Deadlift locked out.
I sound like a meathead…LOL!!!!
