I guess I have a couple of options, alternate Tuesday's pushing work between Press (overhead) and some form of horizontal push such and dumbell bench press, or do horizontal pushing work on thursdays.
Yeah, do the latter. Dumbell bench press on Thursdays.
One other idea is to start adding weight. What are your thoughts on weighted press ups as an exercise?
If your very strong on pushups some resistance bands may be a good investment. Banded pushups are great and an easy way to add resistance to the pushups. What's more it's "accommodated" resistance.
That is what I'd prefer you to do the banded pushups and then the bands will be useful for many things. If you have someone who can put a weight plate on your back, lol, you can always to that. People use chains but let's assume you don't want for fork out that kind of money just for pushups.
Another one I guess is dips… I have done dips with bodyweight + 35kg for around 5 reps but I find that if I do them with no horizontal pushing i end up works the front of the shoulders a lot but not my chest.
Chest is the reason most people do dips. If you can do dips with no problem (they can put hella stress on the ACL) then that's an option as well and perfectly suited to alternating with other things because you don't want to be too devoted to them (that doesn't mean you can't do them twice of three times in a row just don't make a career out of them). Certainly an option to consider. Make sure that your hands are forward of your body a little bit (never behind) and only go as low as you need to.
Now I don't mind in regards to asthetics but I tend to find that after doing this for a couple of months that it feels like my shoulders are rounding forwards. This is hard to describe so if it doesn't make sense let me know and I will try to elaborate.
I think based on what I just said above you don't need to worry about me suggesting you do dips for months until your shoulder round forward. Although a lot of people, who suggest the dips are the "upper body squat" are quite devoted to them, they are an exercise that is good to visit but you wouldn't want to live with them. Dips enjoy a bit of a mythical status due to a lot of the "old-timers" who were very influential claiming they would give you a 55 inch chest just by thinking about them.
Joe and I were posting at the same time, btw.
