Practical Scientist -Part 7
By Jamie Hale

BCAA Supplement Roundtable
By Jamie Hale

Do wee need BCAA supplementation? The debate rages on.

The following is an excerpt from Knowledge and Nonsense: the science of nutrition and exercise

“J. Hale: Many contest preparation specialists promote the use of mega doses of BCAAs even when the person is in a positive calorie balance and eating a ton of protein. Have you seen any evidence or is there a logical reason to assume BCAAs from supplements are superior to BCAAs found in food?

D. Moore: No, this is completely wrong. If eating within maintenance levels with adequate protein, you will already be getting sufficient BCAA content. Let’s think about this. Most whole food proteins (including protein drinks) are made up of about 15 percent BCAA. Therefore, a 220-lb bodybuilder who eats 2 grams/pound/day is already receiving about 66 grams of BCAA per day. Even if cutting, most bodybuilders still eat sufficient protein. Therefore, he would still be consuming sufficient BCAA. I think somehow people started to believe that BCAAs are magical where lean mass retention is concerned.

Interview with Fatloss Troubleshooter
By Jamie Hale

The following interview was conducted with Leigh Peele (Author, Nutrition and Exercise Consultant from North Carolina).

J Hale: How does it feel to be a female in an industry that consists of mostly males?

L Peele: Honestly it has ups and downs, more so in person. I think in print there is something A-sexual about my delivery, I can joke with the boys so to speak so people almost forget I am a female and make no judgments in that aspect. I rarely get "for a girl she knows her stuff" kind of comments. In person it can be a bit more trying, but you push through it and you show what you got. I would also be lying to say it didn't matter, I mean I can't spot certain levels of lifting, don't get me wrong I can hold my own, but I haven't gotten where I am letting my ego take control of my common sense. It seems with men I go more nutrition and with women I go more lifting. Not that there isn't a split there, but for generalization purposes it can go down like that.

Knowledge Summit video featuring KY Reptile Zoo. The video will feature a brief tour of the zoo and a discussion with Jim Harrison the owner. Harrison is a unique individual that has been featured on National Geographic Channel, Animal Planet and PBS. He has been legally dead 2 or 3 times. Future videos will include East Kentucky Science Center, Visiting Kentucky’s most popular trail (as rated by trails.com), and Night Hiking with Night Vision. Knowledge Summit Videos will feature mostly science and nature topics. I hope to get some footage of some KY (supposed) supernatural events.

MaxCondition video. I am having a problem determining the topic of the first video. It will probably be behind the neck Split Style Jerk or Basic Sledgehammer movements. Maybe non-wtted GPP circuit oh well.

Men’s Weightlifting –Shane Hamman

I had the pleasure of meeting Shane a few years ago. He was very humble and expressed his passion for Olympic Weightlifting during our conversation. I conducted an interview with Shane that is featured on my site. I also met Ingrid Marcum the same day.

Current Training Goal & Projects
My primary training objective is to maximize my aerobic work capacity. I have not emphasized aerobic capacity in years. The reason I am emphasizing this quality is so I can do some multi-day hiking and canoeing (or kayaking) trips this summer.

I'd be interested in the behind the neck split jerk subject.

I actually learned jerks that way until I became comfortable and then switched to front. But it's very problematic.

So I put in my vote for that.

The bcaa thing is just amazing. I swear you'd think the stuff was crack. It's being helped along by all these "cutting" e-books telling people to consume 30 grams of bcaas between meals 8 times a day or something as it will preserve muscle on a caloric deficit. People go so far as to wake up several times a night to sip bcaa (powder).

Hmmm…seeing that these popular cutting books are put out by supplement companies, do you think?….nah, there couldn't be a connection.

I remember Alan Aragon used to talk about the same thing, calling whey bcaa+. The thing is though, I have dealt with people who are taking aminos but have never even learned what PROTEIN is. So instead of asking about how much protein to consume and things like that, they ask how many amino pills to consume.

I have a whole bunch of old bcaa debates and such I will link or post up later.

I very much enjoyed the review of "Good Calories, Bad Calories" in Practical Scientist Part IV, Coach.

http://www.mindandmuscle.net/node/528

I recently posted this thing called the "Baloney Detection, Collection"

I haven't read the book but using the review I applied many of the comments to the list. Needless to say it didn't score so well. Information is one thing…conclusions are another. A routine comparison of "thin versus obese" people will show a VERY obvious difference in calorie intake.

This insulin thing has gotten out of control on the bodybuildling boards as well. There is an old thread I was involved in way back when and I think your name may have come up a few times.

Also enjoyed the BCAA roundtable.

Thanks for the link to the KASES site. I will be adding that to my resource page.
